TONIGHT, WE ARE YOUNG! gonna set the world on fire! Professor Maple was in his laboratory, making his discoveries like he usually was, however, today was not a good day. He had been trying to improve upon his regeneration potion, hoping to make the effects last longer. At the same time his mind was drifting back to a pokeball design he had drawn up in the middle of the night. A ball that was specifically for catching rare, one-of-a-kind pokemon.
"Bah!" Professor Maple exclaimed to himself, though there were other of his associates in the lab with him, including his assistant who looked a bit scared. Oh well, it was one of her first days here. She'd get used to it. Professor Maple swiped off the plans of the regeneration potion and began on the design of his new pokeball. Maybe instead, he could make it so it could catch pokemon caught by others if the pokemon was unhappy with its current owner.... Maple quickly pushed the thought from his head thinking of the evil that Team Shadow could do with such a power. Plus, he had heard there was a machine that could do that already if the pokemon were corrupted by the evil inside of them.
However, his mind would not stay occupied on the paper for too long. It was too small of a space to fit everything he needed in. In times like this he would pull out his trusty crayon and move the desk out of the way. And he did. On the white wall behind the desk, he began his design again, placing several notes all around the device, and some mathematical equations on how to adapt the concept of the master ball to the legendary ball, while not being good against normal pokemon. He wanted to make it weak in that respect he could keep a bit of an eye on those looking to capture legendary pokemon, though he wouldn't be able to keep track of everyone who bought the ball. But anyways, it was a project he had dreamt of last night and now it was throwing off his thoughts when he tried working on other things.
"So if I put this thing here, it'll have to be exactly three centimeters..."

just rest your mind 480 WORDS ❊ MAPLE ❊ DECENT MUSE AND LEAVE YOUR PAIN BEHIND SHe should have been out, far away from the town by now. She was supposed to start that long journey of literally finding herself, yet she couldn't bring herself to leave. Not just yet, at the very least. Perhaps tomorrow... Or the next day. Eh, it depends on how she is feeling. She didn't want to just leave. This was the only place she actually knew about, and going out into the large world of the unknown... It frightened her, though she would never say that out loud. No, her insecurities would stay locked away, deep within the caverns of her mind. She did not need to let anyone in on the turmoil she faced while conscious, even sometimes while unconscious. No, no, no. Nobody needed to be burdened with that.
There was a tug on the fabric of her skirt, snapping the girl out of her thoughts. She tilted her head down, curious pink eyes spotting a smudge of blue against the pale material. A soft smile graced her lips as she crouched down, pale hands reaching out and picking up the young Totodile who was putting on quite the balancing act just to reach her skirt. "You could have just called, silly." She whispered, keeping her voice low. She didn't want to bother anyone, if there was anyone near her. Standing back up with the blue Pokemon cradled in her arms, the girl looked around, observing her surroundings. She was just outside the laboratory, the one she had been spending the past few years at. It was, honestly, all she knew, and it was often hard to travel deeper into the southern portion of Springboard Town. When she did swallow her uncertainty, she found friends within the town. That much was a reassurance to her.
Mint pursed her lips, taking slow, quiet steps towards the door. Slipping inside, she made sure that the door made little to no sound as she closed it. Her gaze swept over the entrance as she tiptoed deeper into the laboratory. Adjusting the weight of the TOtodile, she held up an index finger to her mouth, said water type doing the same as they silently slipped pasted various assistants. Pink eyes zoned in on the professor, and she couldn't help but roll her eyes as a desk was pushed to the side and that lovely little crayon was taken out. Making her way over to the man, she stood a few feet away for a moment, simply watching as he drew on the wall. Deciding to break the silence and make herself known, she spoke. "Sometimes, I wonder who is younger." The corners of her lips curled in a grin as she took a few steps closer to the professor, crouching down and sitting on her knees as she observed the crayon drawing on the wall. "So, what'cha working on now, Professor Maple?"

TONIGHT, WE ARE YOUNG! gonna set the world on fire! He was completely unaware of the fact that someone was watching, especially not the girl he had taken care of the past... erm... how long was it again? He could never keep track of time well. Anyways, it felt like a long time he had taken care of her after Cedar found her and dropped her off. Needless to say, Maple was surprised when he heard a voice from behind him and he quickly scrambled to hide his work from the on watcher.
"Don't you dare steal my -" Maple began scolding the onlooker until his eyes rested on Mint and he smiled innocently, "Oh. Its you. I could've sworn you were Professor Cedar trying to steal my work again." She never tried to steal his work, though they joked about it when she would sneak up on him like that. Cedar was the master of being sneaky. Well, that Shade Black was good too. He wondered how the two would do in a sneaky-ness contest. Still, he was sure that Cedar would win, what with her sneaking around behind him, stealing his crayons from his cup on his desk (or at least Maple blames her when they go missing, even if she's in Grahm Town at the time; in fact, one time he called her to ask for his favorite blue crayon back, though he would later find it in one of his drawers).
He relaxed and stopped trying to cover his work up and turned back to it, thought to answer her question he turned his head towards her and with a smile said, "It's a new pokeball. Designed just for catching legendaries. Saw it in a dream last night." He looked absolutely delighted by the idea. His eyes were beaming, and his smile looked like it almost hurt to hold it so wide. He quickly turned his eyes towards his drawing again and bit his lower lip regaining his train of thought and began to draw again.
"Why are you here, Mint? I thought you had left on your journey?" Maple wondered curiously as he began dotting in a massive area with the green crayon he was using. It was a good question. He was sure she wanted to figure out who she really was, and where she came from, and a journey was perfect for that.

just rest your mind 446 WORDS ❊ MAPLE ❊ DECENT MUSE AND LEAVE YOUR PAIN BEHIND Her eyes grew wide as she blinked in surprise, watching the man as he scrambled to... to... What was he doing, exactly? She wasn't going to steal his work or anything. no use would come from that, unless she planned on selling it on the black market. uh, not like she ever thought of doing that or anything. ahem. regardless, he didn't have to act like that. it was only Mint, so why get so--oh, right. she feigned a look of horror, as if she was offended, bringing her free hand to her chest. "Cedar? Do I really sound that old?" She threw herself back and let her legs sprawl out, laying on the cold floor. The Totodile was quick to leap out of her grasp, mimicking the girl after rolling around on the floor for a moment or two. Mint brought one hand up to her forehead, resting the back of her hand against her skin. "I'm getting old! Oh, woe is me!"
She waited on the ground, listening to the familiar sounds of the laboratory, listening to the professor as he spoke. The girl slowly pushed herself up with her arms, shifting around until she was sitting on her knees once more with her skirt tucked underneath her thighs. She eyed the drawing, pursing her lips as the man spoke. A Pokeball he saw in his dreams? That only captures Legendaries? "So... Basically... It's a Master Ball that only works on the Pokemon of legends?" Mint paused, pondering over this information in her head. "You should put a tracking chip in each one that activates after a successful capture. I mean, if you plan on selling these things, then at least you would be able to keep tabs on people with such powerful Pokemon. You could even help the police that way!" Of course, a tracking chip might be a bit too obvious to some parties. Oh well.
She smile that had begun to form again on her face disappeared in a flash as soon as the journey was mentioned. She bit down on her lower lip, focusing her gaze on the drawing on the wall, not daring to look anywhere else. "I..." She began, trying to find her words. She wasn't about to just blurt out I don't want to leave yet or I'm afraid. That was too childish. If she was going to be on a journey, then she needed to act matured! Mint forced a smile on her face, glancing over at Professor Maple. "I wanted to see the lab once more before I left." Yeah, that would work. It was the truth, after all. It just wasn't the whole truth.

TONIGHT, WE ARE YOUNG! well at least the Professor is! Now he took offense for the now absent Professor. They were good friends, and Cedar was not old! Well, older than Mint, actually, quite a bit older than Mint. Well, at least she had an excuse for calling her old. If Cedar were old... then... that meant he was old too. That wasn't a good thing. He didn't like being considered old! He was still young! Well, at least not old. More of in the middle. Either way, it didn't matter, Cedar wasn't old, and neither was he.
"It's a compliment!" Maple said as an excuse reassuringly, "And anyways Cedar isn't old. Next you're going to say I'm old." Maple was a bit sensitive when it came to his age. Normally, one hears about the stereotypical woman lying about their age. That was Maple. He had celebrated his 25th birthday several times already. He didn't like the whole expectation that as one got older they had to act more 'mature'. He was just as mature as he needed to be, thank you very much. When things got serious, he would be serious, it just would depend on whether he was being the optimistic serious or the serious serious. That didn't happen often in his line of work. Luckily, he picked an occupation he could be as crazy as he wanted to be.
Maple smiled widely and laughed aloud, not because she was funny, but because he was quite happy with her suggestion. "That's a great idea. Though, that would mean I need to create a tracker that's undetectable... hmmmm..." Maple stared at his drawing, the end of the crayon between his teeth as he thought. Yummy, yummy crayon. Not. Maple quickly removed the crayon. That was his way of getting rid of the nasty habit of chewing on the ends of his pencils and pens... well, and he liked crayons on the wall because they stood out and could be erased when he was done. Maple took a step to his left and began sketching out plans to a tracker he had made previous, planning on making alterations that could make it more undetectable.
Maple sensed the hesitation in her voice, but ignored it. If there was something else wrong, then she would say something, right? He trusted her and if she really needed to talk she'd ask... maybe. Knowing Mint, maybe not. Oh well. If it were the truth, she'd be leaving soon anyways so he'd discover it sooner or later. "The lab will be here if you ever want to visit again, you know. It will always welcome you, Mint." He wanted to at least reassure her that she always had a place here at the lab, no matter what were to happen. "Your place is out there, I know it. How else will you find out about your past?" Maple was sure that she just needed a bit of prodding and maybe a boost of confidence. He wasn't always the best when dealing with people's troubles, but he tried his very best. "If you want to talk, just give me a call." And being the sort of person he was, unless he was conferencing with Grahm Town or another of those he set on their pokemon journey (not many usually called anymore), he'd be available and more than willing to talk and cheer her up.

just rest your mind 403 WORDS ❊ MAPLE ❊ IJWU* MUSE AND LEAVE YOUR PAIN BEHIND "but you are old!" her response was quick, blurting out as the filter on her mind switched off. "you're, like, up there with... with..." a look of confusion crossed over her face as she tried to remember what she was going to say. oh, come on, mint, you were taught about this earlier! ugh. "... like that one really, really old professor from... from... from kanto!" yeah, that was it. she was exaggerating, of course. maple wasn't that old. she just enjoyed the reaction he gave when dealing with the ages of him or professor cedar. well, actually... she didn't even know the ages of either professor. if she was told their ages before, she did not remember them now. they didn't look very old, at least, but they definitely looked older than her. that was all that mattered, and it was all that justified her calling them old.
respect your elders. pah. yeah right.
mint shifted around, bringing her knees up to her chest. wrapping her thin arms around her legs, she rested her chin on her knees while her pink eyes continued watching the wall. she hummed softly to herself, her head tilting to one side ever so slightly. her totodile squirmed around on the ground, finally figuring out that his trainer was no longer feigning shock on the floor. rolling onto his stomach and pushing himself up, the water type toddled over to the girl, tugging on the sleeve of her shirt. each little tug symbolized one word: up. readjusting herself once more to where she was sitting with her legs crossed in the usual "cross-cross-apple-sauce" or whatever people called it pose. mint picked up the totodile, bringing him onto her lap and into her arms. she placed her chin on the pokemon's head, continuing to watch the wall as if it was the only thing to look at in the laboratory. in a sense, it was.
"what if..." she began mumbling before pausing, chewing on her lower lip as she thought. she didn't want to burden the man with her worries, but then she might burden him by making him worry... ugh, this is too complicated. my head's starting to hurt. shaking her head to putting on a smile once more, she lifted up a hand and pointed a pale finger at the crayon drawings on the wall. "you should make the pokeball pink." ah, what a typical little girl.
NOTE: *i just woke up muse

TONIGHT, WE ARE YOUNG! well at least the Professor is! or at least he wishes he was.
Maple looked at the young girl with a look of complete shock. How dare she compare him to Oak? Oak was just about to kick the bucket! Well, Oak wasn't really THAT old, but he was still a good forty years older than him. He could be his father! His grandfather even! Maple's expression slowly change from absolute horror to a depressed sort of acceptance. If he were animated in a cartoon, he'd have sighed a mushroom shape right now with the sigh he let out. He hung his head in shame his arms hanging in front of him limp and his legs slightly bent, lowering his apparent height. "You're right, I'm old." His voice came out more as a wail than anything else. Many in the lab could hear him and some newer people even gave him an odd look, while those who were used to him simply went on with their work. Of course, Mr. Ball of Sunshine was simply playing with Mint and seeing if he could make her feel bad, and was trying his best to make it seem real.
Maple laughed softly, if Maple could ever be soft in times like this of course, when she suggested that the pokeball be pink. There was only one problem with that, however. "I don't have a pink crayon though." It was true, his last pink crayon he wore all the way down when he was attempting an experiment of collecting crayon residue and melting it down, combined with other colors, and making a multicolored crayon. However, the brilliant Maple accidentally made it explode somehow. How, he was still unsure of. Then again, his talents lay in discovery about pokemon and things relating to pokemon.
However, suddenly a lightbulb went off in his head. "The Lore-Kaan Equation!" Maple quickly turned to the tracker's blueprint on his wall and began scribbling down a long equation with x's and z's and y's and 9's and various other things. To bad there was no pi. Maple liked pie. However, in the middle of writing down the equation a green pokemon jumped on his back, causing him to flail to the side and somehow land on his desk sitting upright with the green dragon in his hands. "Not you, silly." Maple set Lorcan, his Axew, onto the desk and stood up, straightening his lab coat out.

just rest your mind 407 WORDS ❊ MAPLE ❊ DECENT MUSE AND LEAVE YOUR PAIN BEHIND oh, she was not going to feel sorry for him. he compared her to someone who was (physically) much older than herself, so it was only right that he be compared the same way! she should probably learn the other professor's name... what she could remember about the few moments she was told about the man was that he was--no, is--famous. he made the pokedex and everything! that... was about it, oh and something else about poetry. otherwise, all information about the professor was lost to her. perhaps she should scope out a school one of these days... nah. what child went to school when they could be out facing the dangerous of the world after being handed a pokemon that could potentially kill them if certain circumstances applied? yeah, school was for losers.
not buying into professor maple's woe is me act, she feigned another look of horror. "no pink?" this was a crime to girls everywhere. this was a crime to her! it happened to be her signature, and natural, color, after all: pink hair, pink eyes. how could he run out of pink? silly professor needs to go stock up on crayola! "do you have a white crayon? red plus white equals pink, after all." she paused, a soft frown turning down the corners of her lips. "usually. crayons are weird." a white crayon should help, though. watch him be out of white as well. i feel like i shouldn't leave just to watch after him and keep his crayon supply stocked. ugh, there was now another reason why she didn't want to leave town just yet.
no, no. a journey to literally find yourself is necessary, mint.
ugh, i hate it when you're right, conscience.
she was broken out of her thoughts by the man's exclamation. "the what-a-what?" mint watched with confusion apparent on her face as the man started scribbling on the wall once more. once more: school. it would help her out, sort of, when she tried to comprehend professor maple's antics. maybe she could ask cedar one of these days... nah. she might not get a straight answer. it would just end up as a jumble of words she did not know. the confused frown turned upside-down as the professor's axew made himself known. a soft giggle shook her shoulders as she watched maple flail about. thank arceus her dear colby only tugged on her skirt to get her attention.

TONIGHT, WE ARE YOUNG! well at least the Professor is! or at least he wishes he was. really, Mint is the only one here that is.
Finding that Mint was not reacting to his feigned sadness, Maple whipped on his signature smile and laughed. Maple found joy in the fact that Mint did not buy his act. Why? Who needed a reason why? He seemed to be able to find joy in everything, even he, the kid in Sinnoh who decided not to go on his journey, despite most of his childhood friends doing so. He found joy in just staying home and studying pokemon rather than pitting them against each other. Not that he felt pokemon battles were bad or anything, in fact it helped pokemon grow and bonds between trainer and pokemon develop further (it was one of his many areas of study).
"Combining crayons has proved... ah... disastrous in the past." He was protective over certain colors of crayons, and so he would never use them in his experiments, which also meant his red he wouldn't waste trying to create pink. Plus, he was a man. He had no need for a pink crayon. Unless he wanted to take up trying to draw people, which would include Mint, probably. After all, she was kind of like a daughter to him, even if she'd only been with him two years. She also made him feel old, but not the kind of old he dreaded, but the kind of old that made him feel like he was making a difference in the world. Sure, his work would make a difference, but to be remembered like Mint would remember him. Well, hopefully would remember him. Then again, he hadn't been a great father, in his mind at the very least, and acted more like a cool kid down the street. Ok. Maybe that was too big of a lie.
"Hahaha! It's an equation that relates the microscopic artificial variance of light to the photonic particle matrix contained within a pokeball that allows the pokemon to be stored in such a small area. If I apply it to the tracking device, it would appear to be exactly like the emitters in the pokeball. The only thing is making sure it emits the perfect signal or it would be traceable, which can be calculated using the equation if I just plug in the right numbers," Professor Maple explained, expecting Mint to not understand. He looked at Lorcan with a smile and the Axew looked extremely happy, even if it didn't understand him either. He actually really liked when people didn't know what he was talking about. It made him feel smart. Whereas if someone understood him, or called him out when he was talking nonsense (*cough* Professor Cedar *cough*) he didn't have as much fun as he was now.

just rest your mind 250 WORDS ❊ MAPLE ❊ BLEH MUSE AND LEAVE YOUR PAIN BEHIND how could combining crayons be disastrous? all you do is color with on crayon and then color over it with the other. oh well, she would not press the matter. what happened in maple's crayon life was absolutely none of her business. it's not like she's the crayon police or anything. pushing the thought of crayons and the color pink away from her mind, she focused--or, at least, tried to focus--on the rather large explanation she was given about the whatchamacallit equation. a dumbfounded look crossed her face as she stared at the professor, unsure of what he was talking about or how to react. once more: school. then again, she really does not want to know about the complex things that the professors enjoyed talking about. it would just make her head worse than professor maple's explanation does.
letting out an irritated huff of air, mint pursed her lips and puffed out her cheeks. "let's pretend i understood every word you just said." chewing on the inside of her cheek, the girl tried to figure out what to say next. she was already confused, and she was ready to give up talking about the pokeball that only catches legendary pokemon idea all together. it was only going to make her even more confused than she was right now. standing up, she dusted off the back of her skirt with one hand. "i... guess i should get going, huh?" she glanced around the laboratory. "any words of advice before i go?"
